Mary, Mary Quite Contrary, How Does Your Garden Grow?

With the warmth and plenty of sunshine, southern California has been experiencing this week, it has got me thinking about gardening and what I would love to do with our small backyard. However, I will be the first to admit I do not possess a green thumb. Most plants that I come in contact with do not live very long and quickly die. I swear I water them every other day (ok in reality probably every other week), I swear I put them in the sunshine (ok maybe either they get too much sun or not enough sun). So if any of you have some green thumb tips, I do seriously need some, thanks!
If I did have a green thumb, these are some backyard projects I would be working on stat!
First, this incredible hanging herb garden with a shoe holder, in fact I think I must do this even with my lack of a green thumb.

And then because I still have two more pallets in my backyard even after Sean made the wine rack, I need to start working on this lovely project.

It would be fun to lay my own cement and make a beautiful walkway

Since I love eating strawberries, I put them on my yogurt each morning, I would need to build this strawberry tower so I could walk out into my backyard each morning for fresh berries.

Actually I would love to tear down the ugly brick wall we have surrounding our AC unit and replace the bricks with the pallets and a planter box to make the area more pretty

Maybe I can add some color to our fence with these potted flowers

Of course a backyard isn't complete without a fire pit especially for making s'mores!

I wouldn't call myself a super experienced gardener, but I would recommend getting "easy" to care for plants. Like ones that bounce back quickly. So...no orchids or anything specialized! haha. I'd say aloe plants, or just little random plants you'd find in the grocery store or something (at least if your grocery has a floral section, like my Kroger does). Those are always pretty easy plants. African violets are good ones too.

I actually am a killer of succulents because i care for them TOO much. But maybe succulents are the way to go for you, especially if you live in California! :)

I am right there with you about not having a green thumb (...mine is really more of a black thumb)! I so want to try growing some herbs or something though.

Ooooo I like the pallet idea! It's really cute. I'd love to give you some gardening tips, but I certainly do not have a green thumb. Every plant I touch dies. But best of luck to you in your gardening endeavors :)

Great inspiration! I'm a big gardener. Mostly flowers, but I did big pots of herbs last year and they grew really well. Until I went on 10-day vacation that is and got neglected. I have faith you can grow pretty flowers and strawberries!!

I love that shoe hanger with all of the herbs! I don't have a green thumb either - I always kill all of my plants! But I really would love to grow my own herbs...and maybe some sunflowers :)

I love the strawberry tower! I put strabs and blueberries on my yogurt each morning too, so this year I bought a blueberry plant and put it in a huge blue pot, and my mom made me a hanging strawberry plant for my balcony! I don't have a yard so I've got to make due with my balcony, which luckily gets a lot of sun!
Good luck on your projects Meg!

ok I am coming over! haha! :) I like the palette planter, and actually at Home Depot and Lowe's ask for plants that are hard to kill, they'll help you out!!

I LOVE the pots on the fence photo. My backyard is fenced in with your typical tall wooden fence, and I am planning on painting some terracotta pots and mounting them on there this spring. It's such a great idea!

These are fabulous ideas. I have a black thumb for sure. Planted some flowers last Sunday and they are already dead. Sad.

I don't think I'd do well with a garden, I'd probably kill everything by over-watering it. But, I do love the herb garden in the shoe holder - I could do that.

I am so terrible at growing plants too! I just am not home nearly enough to water the plants like I should. However, I love having pretty flowers on our deck!! :)
