Oh, be still my scone loving heart...

If you must know something about me, I love things in cycles. Like a certain type of cookie, I want that cookie a lot and will make multiple batches then move onto the next sweet treat. Last week I made some delicious orange scones. Then yesterday I wanted to make the same scones again except I didn't have any oranges and I was out of sour cream which I substituted Greek yogurt. But I wanted scones so I wasn't going to let a few ingredients stand in my way! If you have been around my blog long enough, you know my insane obsession for all things yellow, citrus and sour.
I think the best part of these scones are the citrus sugar you put into the scones. Mixing the citrus zest and sugar beforehand enhances the citrus more!
One final word: make these scones!

Ingredients: 1/3 cup sugar, zest of 1 orange or 2 lemons (whatever citrus you prefer),  2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 cup frozen butter, grated, 1/2 cup sour cream (I mentioned I didn't have sour cream and substituted plain Greek yogurt), 1 egg. Glaze: 1 1/2 tablespoons butter, melted, 1/2 cup confectioners sugar, 2-4 tablespoons orange juice, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Place a piece of parchment paper on your baking sheet.
Zest your chosen citrus fruit into the granulated sugar into a small bowl and mix.

In another bowl, mix the sour cream and egg until well combined.

In a large bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder.
Add in the citrus/sugar mixture and stir.

Grate a frozen stick of butter into the dry ingredients and mix.

Lastly, add in the sour cream and egg stirring to combine completely but don't over mix. On a slightly floured counter, pat the dough into a circle that is 3/4" thick and about 8" across.

Cut the circle into 8 pieces then place on the prepared baking sheet.

Bake your scones for 15-17 minutes until golden brown on top.

Don't take them out any earlier! Allow them to cool for at least 10 minutes before applying the glaze. Mix the glaze ingredients in a shallow bowl. Either dip the scones into the glaze or drizzle it across the top of the scones. Then enjoy!!

I have a bunch of fresh blueberries that I was thinking would be perfect for scones! Do you have any tips for a first-timer? Do you think I could add blueberries to this mix or do you have a favorite blueberry scone recipe?
