How to Master Your Kitchen

For the next installment of my How to Master Your Kitchen series, I am talking about a peeler. Check out the previous installments about a zesterfood processordutch ovenstand mixer, and a metal steamer.

Why am I doing this series? I believe that knowing how to use kitchen tools properly is important and will help you make better food. Knowing how to master your kitchen is like your job, you must have certain appliances to help you do your job better and kitchen tools are the same. This series is about knowledge and then hopefully help you realize that cooking isn't all that bad, it is just about knowing how to use your tools properly.

master your kitchen - peeler

Today I am talking about a handy dandy must have in your kitchen peeler. Why do you need a peeler? A peeler will spare your fingers when you are peeling potatoes to make mashed potatoes, you don't want to use a knife to peel the potatoes, believe me you don't want to. Before Sean and I were married but celebrated Thanksgiving with his parents, I was making mashed potatoes but Sean didn't have a peeler. So of course when I married him and we move in together I brought my peeler. A peeler can be used to peel the skin off of potatoes, of course, carrots, mangoes, kiwis. A peeler can be used to make noodles of zucchini too. Some peelers will be smaller in width in the blade and others thicker, which is how you can get zucchini noodles.

Want other ways to use your peeler? Sharpen a pencil, no joke! If you don't have a pencil sharpener but have a dull pencil, try a peeler, it will sharpen that pencil in no time. Need slivers of cheese or chocolate? Take that block of chocolate or cheese and get slivers with that peeler. Also if you need to soften butter fast but don't have time to let it ome to room temperature? Use the peeler to get slivers of butter and it will come to room temperature much faster than if it was in stick form. A fourth way to use your peeler is on scented soap. If you use scented soap in a guest bathroom for the scent and for decoration purposes but the scent seems to be fading, peel the top layer off of the soap. Your scented soap will start filling your bathroom with that wonderful fragrance soon enough.

Have I given you enough reasons why you need to own a peeler if you don't already have one? I hope by now I have. Have any tools you can me to include in this series? I love suggestions!

I have a peeler, but I actually find my paring knife faster for preparing veggies. I'm sure, one day, when I am having a finger stitched, I'll eat those words...

I love peelers (haha that sounds weird to say), but they are by far one of the things I use most in the kitchen. I'm terrible at peeling potatoes and other veg with a knife.

I use to work at Sur la Table and learned a lot about chefs tools. And a good peeler is definitely a must have.

We have three different potato peelers, and I promise you every one of them gets used every week. I use to buy the cheap ones, but I use them so often they didn't peel good. So I bought the really good quality ones the last time, and I'm been in love with them ever since! Happy Thursday!

Finally you are talking about something I actually own, teehee! I'm not very domestic. But I do have a peeler and I do sometimes use it. :-)

This is really silly but maybe the kind of things you can make with a double broiler or the best things to strain - I need all the help I can get!
