My running journey

A big aspect of my life that I haven't really talked about here on the blog is running. It has been a constant part of my life since I was a senior in high school. I am an early morning runner, it is the first thing I do when I wake up. The reason I run first thing in the morning is because the likely of me getting it down just dwindles the later the day gets. Running is my priority, it is my me time, it is me taking care of myself so I run.

How did I get started running?
With my dad, every morning before school senior year of high school is the short story. In high school, I was in the International Baccalareaute (I.B.) and to get the IB diploma you have to record a certain number of exercise hours. The easiest way I figured was running with my dad. From there, it just continued to be a frequent daily thing. My dad for his main form of exercise ran most days of the week and it just felt natural to join him in doing so. That is the story of how I started running and continue to this day.
Some people think because my husband is a cross country/track and field university coach that he got me started running. It was our first date that we discovered we had a love of running, him a little bit more intensely than me having run in college, but it is nice to the same love.

How much do I run daily?
A daily run for me is usually about 5 miles and before Caleb, running was 6 weeks a week. Lately, it has been more like 3 but I am working to get back up to at least 5 days a week.

What races have I done?
To date, I have completely 1 marathon, 4 half marathons, and several 5Ks.

If I wanted to run, how would I get started?
Get a good pair of shoes, and on the day you want to start running, go out! Put on that pair of shoes and go even if you have to run 1 minute and walk 2 and maintain that for the entire time you said you wanted to run. Then next time extend the time you ran and shorten the time you walked until you can get to the point where you can run 1 mile. Then try for 2 miles. Just put one foot in front of the other and commit to running when you said you would. Don't let people take your running time. Protect it. Make it your time to maintain health and get exercise in.

If you have any questions, I would love for you to put them in the comments or email me directly: megmouch@gmail.com

Running is my happy place that is for sure! I don't know how I would have gotten through some stuff without it.

Tat's awesome your a runner! I used to be a pretty avid one, but fell out of it a little when we lived in a not so great neighborhood. I'm starting to get back into now though. I did a half marathon a little while ago and I'm thinking about doing another one.

How fun that you used to run with your dad! Did he have to slow down for you at first? What time do you get up to run now? I am definitely a person that likes to workout in the morning if I can, but with me already getting up at 4:30am to get to work, I don't think I could get up any earlier to work out. So I guess I'll have to stick to after work, boo!

I, too, graduated from an IB program but we didn't have an exercise requirement. I think that's a great idea! I played tennis all four years of high school so I guess I unofficially got those hours!

Once the weather warms up, I hope to get back in the habit of running once or twice a week before work. It really is a great way to start the day if you ignore the fact that I have to be up by 4:20 to do so. :(

Glad you've been able to keep it up!
