Yesterday was my first run back after giving birth. I admit I was scared on Sunday night thinking about it and why I was scared I still don't know. Maybe I was scared at the prospect of I have not been working out for so long why start back now? Or it has been easier not to work out except for the occasional walk with the dogs and Caleb in the Ergo. In case you were wondering, it is a family walk, Sean has the dogs and I have Caleb. Or maybe it was the how will my body react to the pounding of the pavement. Yesterday when I woke up though I followed through with the plan that I had mentioned to Sean the night before. I would feed Caleb before and just after feeding I was out the door for my run and once I returned, Sean would go out for his run. (p.s. it is spring break this week at the university he coaches at so daddy is home all week!)
So I stuck to the plan, fed Caleb, put on my running shoes and didn't give it a second thought.
Did it hurt? Yes, it did. Did I walk a few times during my 3 mile run? Yup and I admit it to you all. Did I enjoy the feeling of the post-exercise burn? You know it although the burn right now is a I haven't done strenuous exercise for a bit now so the burn is a BURN! Will I get out there tomorrow? That is the plan and the day after and the day after...
Reintroducing exercise back into my daily routine is going to be harder than I thought especially when it hasn't been for so long. It will take some coordinating of schedules with Sean to accomplish it but we want to set a good example for Caleb and even though he is only 6 weeks(!), do it now and it won't be harder later.
So there is my two cents on running post-giving birth and now my 30 year achy knees will get a nice heating pad, ok it really isn't that bad...

yay! Good for getting back at it! You should look at a mommy running club called Stroller Strides. Have you heard about it? You pay a monthly fee, or they have other plans you can join, and they basically run a bit, do a circuit exercise, run a bit more do some more circuit stuff. Ours is pretty intense workout, it gets you out, you get exercise with your little one, you get to socialize with mommy's. Best of both worlds, check it out! :) If you have questions just email me. So happy that you're back running, it feels good when you get back into your pre-preggo jeans!
way to go momma! I started getting back into a workout routine a few months after Elyse was born and I'm so happy I did!
3 miles is huge for your first run, great job!! Even with the little walks.
Fitness is so important to me and I find it so hard to make the time now that I'm back working and being a mommy! I do it when I can!
