Sugar for My Valentine

Thanks everyone for the get well-wishes, I am feeling a lot better and back to blogging.
P.S. I miss you all.

Yes, this is a sugary sweet Valentine's Day-related post. You know those store bought sugar cookies, the thick cookies with an equally thick amount of frosting with sprinkles on top. Well I wanted to top those store bought sugar cookies with a homemade recipe. Plus I needed a dessert for the Super Bowl party we had on Sunday, yes, they should have been football shaped cookies but oh well.
Also I may just have a slight problem when Sean and I go to a potluck type of meal and I bring a homemade dessert and it is hardly eaten whereas the store bought desserts are full consumed.
Today is the Valentine's Day link-up I am hosting with Elizabeth Ann of Elizabeth Ann's Recipe Box, Allison of Cupcake Diaries and Whitney of Harvest Home. Share one, share all of your Valentine's Day inspired ideas whether food, clothing, projects, it is your time to shine.

First, gather together your ingredients for the cookies:
1 cup sour cream, 1 cup butter, room temperature, 2 cups white sugar, 4 eggs, 1 teaspoon almond or vanilla extract, 6 cups flour, 3 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda.

Ingredients for the frosting:
1 cup butter, 4 cups powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon almond extract, 1/3 cup heavy cream.
*I halved my recipe and still made two sheet pans full of cookies

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In your mixing bowl, cream the butter until fluffy, about 5 minutes.
Next add in the sugar and cream the two ingredients together.

Add in the sour cream, then mix, then eggs and almond extract or vanilla, whatever you choose, then mix, mix, mix.

Now you add in the dry ingredients, the flour, baking soda and baking powder.

After the dough is fully mixed one last minute, wrap up all the dough in plastic wrap and stick it in the frig for about 25 minutes before you roll out the dough and cut out the cookies.
After the dough has been in the frig, roll out the dough on your floured container until about 1/4 thick then cut your cookies with the cookie cutter, whatever shape you have.

Bake the cookies in the oven for 8-10 minutes, the cookies may look slightly underdone but you want that, you definitely want that.

Let the cookies cool after they have baked.
While the cookies are baking, make that delicious yummy frosting.

In your mixing bowl, cream the butter. Have you caught onto my ingredients first, always cream the room temperature butter then add in the other wet ingredients.

So cream the butter, then add in the powdered sugar then mix away.

Add in the extract then the heavy cream.

Let the mixer mix all that goodness together and I added a few drops of red food coloring for the pink color. You can color the frosting any color you want or leave it white. Spread the frosting on the cooled cookies then sprinkle if you like or don't sprinkle. Then serve, eat and enjoy these yummy Valentine's Day cookies.
