My Wishlist for a Husband

A little personal story for you today!

I always knew I was suppose to get married, it was my dream, my wish to have a partner to go through life with, to laugh with him, have those ups and downs with during our lifetime. I wanted to get married more than having children. I said to myself that choosing the person I wanted to marry would be the second most important decision I would make in my life, the first most important decision was to be a follower of Christ, to have a personal relationship with my Father.
So I didn't take dating lightly ever, if I didn't see a potential in the first couple of days, then usually I would end it. Going to a Christian college, there is this phenomenon known as Ring by Spring, dating couples get engaged by the spring semester of their senior year and then start planning their wedding after graduation.
That didn't happen to me in college. I graduated without a boyfriend and thus certainly not an engagement ring on my finger.
After college, you got from these huge social circles because all your friends live a few apartments down, your besties are in all your classes, you meet up for lunch, hang out again for dinner and then have all these wonderful weekend plans.
Once you graduated college, those social circles for me at least became next to nothing. I hated the weekends because it meant pretty much hanging by myself all weekend long because my social circles had moved back to their hometowns, or we would make plans and come Friday night my friends would cancel their plans with me.
Dating was a hit or miss, I tried a few meet-ups through Match.com but in the end I didn't feel comfortable with our story of we met online. I know very successful relationships that met through online dating sites and I am happy for them but it just wasn't for me.
During all these years however, I kept a list in my wallet. I made a list of the top qualities I wanted in my future husband. These are the qualities that were most important to me in my future mate because again I said who I would say yes to marrying would be the second most important decision I would make.
I called it my G-list (no sexual innuendos intended).
In order the qualities I put down are:
laughter
physically active
Christian
responsible
trustworthy
high morals
good family background
loves to travel
experience new cultures.

I write this post to specifically talk about quality #2, physically active.
I didn't write down my future husband had to run, it was just how I am physically active most frequently. I started running my senior year of high school when I would wake up and run with my dad before I went to school and he went to work. Sidenote: when I think back on those times, I am so grateful I had those moments with my dad
However, when Sean mentioned he was a runner on our first date, I checked off that box next to my list.
I went on a 7 mile run yesterday in training for my half marathon coming up next month and while it wasn't a fabulous run, I came back with a thought.

When I prayed for a husband who was physically active, I had no idea God would answer my prayer with a husband who coached runners for a living.
My thought was when I prayed for a husband who was physically active, God provided so much more than that. He provided a husband who would encourage me to run more, run higher mileage and to run harder. He provided me with a husband who knew I could run faster than I thought I could, God provided me a husband who believed in me and my running abilities more than I did.

When Sean and I did the Color Run on Sunday, he suggested holding hands together as we crossed the finish line and this was captured.
We go through this life together as a team and I am looking forward to many more surprises God has in store for the reason why He picked Sean to be my partner, my helpmate and my husband.

If you are single, I would encourage you to write a list of the top qualities you want in your future mate and if you are engaged or married, make a list of the qualities you love most about your mate and a list of the top qualities that drew you to him, keep that in your back pocket or in your wallet, pull it from time to time maybe during arguments, during rough times to remind yourself why you love your husband, fiance or boyfriend.

Amazing post, Meg! I have a very similar story about M and I. I wrote out a list about a year and a half of what qualities and traits I wanted in a partner, then set it aside. It wasn't until we had been dating for about a month or two that I came across the list. As I read it, I nearly cried because of how eerily similar M was to it. I wrote, I believed, and then there was my perfect match. I love hearing more about you and Sean :) And I'm excited for your upcoming half marathon!

What a sweet post, Meg! I am so happy that you married your soulmate, and that the two of you aer so happy together. I love that it was his idea to hold hands when going through the finish line. Here's wishing the both of you many more years of joy together!

PS. My comments have been showing up under "SPAM" in Blogger under the comments section. I apologize ahead of time if that's what happens with this! :( Silly Blogger... I don't know how to fix it!

LOOOVVVEEE THIS!!! I had a list too, for sure. Also, my best friends and I made a cd of songs that we thought portrayed the "perfect guy." Of course, it was called "The Perfect Guy CD." It was made on July 25 while still in highschool. Guess what day I got married on, July 25.... Crazy Crazy!!

What a wonderful post!! This week God has really been speaking to me through the verse 'For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.' -Jeremiah 29:11 Isn't it such a blessing to look back and see that God had bigger and better plans for you than you could have ever imagined during your single days? He is so good.

Oh Meg, what a fantastic post! This was such a pleasure to read. It's so inspiring that you found someone so perfect for you as Sean. And that photo is incredible!!! My best friend and I made a list of all of the qualities our future husbands must have, some are fun and others are more serious. We always get it out when we become interested in a guy to see if he matches up with the criteria! :)

Meg, I loved this post!!! Such an awesome example of how God knows what we need and can bless us better than we could even imagine. I feel the same way about my husband, I had those certain things I wanted in a mate, but I feel like I ended up getting all those and so much more than I could have anticipated...thanks for sharing your sweet story! I wish you could come over for a scone! :)

What a sweet, heartfelt post! Thanks for sharing! I have a similar story in that a long time ago, when I was still in high school) I wrote my own list for what I wanted in my future husband. Like you, I didn't want to date just to date, I wanted to be intentional about it. Through the dating scene, I dated several guys (not at once mind you, haha) and was very serious about a few of them. But, something(s) I needed from my list was not being met by these guys so, eventually, I broke up with them. Some of those break-ups were really hard because I really, truly, loved the guy. But I knew he wasn't the right one and I knew I had to do it.

Then in September 2006 I met Joey. In December 2006 we were married. He was (and still is) my match in every way and we knew from the beginning that this was it. We got married very quickly, but I wouldn't change it. God knew exactly what I needed and blessed me with Joey. And when I look back over the list I made in high school, it's interesting how many of the important ones he met and even how many more important ones I didn't even include on my list, he also met. God definitely worked it all out, and I'm so thankful! :)

Great post, Meg! I did something similar. And God never ceases to amaze me at how He knows best and places people in our lives with qualities/characteristics that we didn't even know we needed! :)

Meg, I've never thought about it that way. But I'm definitely going to take your advice. That's so important. And what a cute photo! I hope you guys frame that one!

Awww Meg this post melted my heart. Isn't it wonderful that just the right person came along for you? It was well, meant to be! That photo of you too crossing the finish line is priceless. One that you should frame and keep forever! :) Wonderful story and good idea to create a list!

This is really sweet! I definitely need to sit down and put onto paper the kind of person I am really looking for. I often get caught up in wanting to have a boyfriend, fiance, husband because everyone around me is doing that but I never stop to think about if the guys I meet are really what I'm looking for. Great reminder :)

I loved this post! I went to a Christian college too and hated the ring by spring saying. So silly. I definitely had my list too. God continues to surprise me with how my husband is more wonderful than I could have imagined. God's plan is always better than our own!!

Beautiful! Although I went to a Christian college too I didn't feel any pressure, but I know a lot of friends who had similar experiences at other colleges (mine was famous for us NOT getting engaged - ha!). But I did have people tell me I set too high of standards... good! God met those standards in the man He gave me. Set high standards and wait patiently, that is my advice to all girls waiting. I am happy that God blessed you so much!!! Your picture on the bottom is perfect :)

This is so sweet. At first when I read through your list, I thought it "physically attractive" instead of active. Clearly, I was reading too fast :)

what a great story. Love the pic of you two holding hands...what a statement. Like if life is a race and you two are running - it's nice to know you have someone just perfect for you holding your hand - also I went to christian college and I didn't graduate with a MRS degree either...what school did you go to?

Such a sweet post! I love this! Thank you for sharing and I so want to do the Color Run and I am NOT a runner at all for rather obvious reasons, but I might become one to do this run!
