Caleb's Birth Story (part 2)

Alright let's be honest, I am dubbing this week Caleb week on the blog. I'm be sharing how we decided on his name, photos of his nursery and anything else. Yes, I am in new mom heaven please indulge me even if you are tired from hearing about me :-)
Ok to continue from where I left off yesterday...
The nurse came into the room at 6:30am to check on my progress, she said I was 9-10cm and fully effaced. She looked at me and said time to start pushing soon. They had to call my doctor first to find out his schedule before I officially started pushing. My nurse, Eleana, came in the room a bit before 8am and said the doctor would be here soon and that we needed to do some practice pushing. Sean asked Eleana if we could have some privacy spending a few moments in prayer with God before our lives were about to change forever. Eleana said that would be wonderful and she said she was a Christian, would she mind praying with us and we said no. So together the three of us prayed, Sean prayed then Eleana prayed for us. It was such a wonderful moment. Eleana then set me up to practice pushing before the doctor arrived.

Finally, my doctor showed up and it was officially time to start pushing. I looked at my doctor and said you know I was suppose to come see you this morning at 9am to get my water broken and then he reminded me actually no I was suppose to see him the previous Thursday and I just smiled because I knew God's timing was better. I kept pushing and pushing every time a contraction came on. However, Caleb's head was stuck on my tailbone. He couldn't get past that point and the longest part of the pushing. The doctor tried everything he could to get Caleb past that point, and on either side of the bed were two wonderful nurses, Tamra and Eleana assisting me with Sean holding my hand standing near my head giving some support and words of encouragement.

At one point, my doctor said if Caleb couldn't get past my tail bone, the only option would be a c-section. I looked wide eyed at Sean when he said that as to tell my husband, THAT is not an option and was all the motivation I needed to push even harder. After moving into a new pushing position, and lying on my side a bit, it helped to get Caleb past my tailbone. The doctor and the nurses told me he is right there and with a head of hair, he is right there you can do it. The doctor also mentioned that with his head being stuck, there was the possibility that his shoulders might get stuck.

Finally, I pushed the last time and then I saw my son out, all the way out, he was officially here and his shoulders didn't get stuck on my tailbone. He was born at 10:10am, less than 12 hours after my water broke! As requested, I immediately wanted Caleb up on my chest and all I remember saying is hi, hi, hi and you are here. I was a bit in shock that he was officially here. Sean cut his umbilical cord and we spent a few minutes as a family of three before Caleb was taken off of me but still in the room to get cleaned up a bit and weighed. While being cleaned, both nurses kept telling me he has two dimples, one on each cheek. Caleb officially weighed 8lbs 12oz and was 21 inches long.  After he was weighed, he was returned to Sean and I and I did some more skin to skin. Sean even took his shirt off and did some skin to skin with his son. Honestly, there is nothing better and I highly recommend it for both parents.

Thank you for taking the time to read this lengthy post, there are so many details that I don't want to forget in the future so writing it down all now while it is still fresh in my mind will help me to remember more later.

xoxo, Meg

awe I love reading baby stories and it is great that you were only in labor for less than 12 hours. That is great that Sean was able to do the skin on skin contact too! He is so cute and I love his little onesie with the puppies on it (:
